Benefits of Tomatoes on Our Health

Should we be eating more tomatoes? New research suggests we may want to. The researchers fed young pigs a diet heavy in tomatoes for a two-week period and found that the diet “increased the diversity of gut microbes and altered gut bacteria toward a more favorable profile.” The researchers ensured that “any microbiome changes seen with the study diet could be attributed to chemical compounds in the tomatoes.” With this interesting finding, the research team aims to extend the study to people and see if any health changes happen to the human gut microbiome.
