This study found that arginine, a safe and inexpensive supplement that’s already approved for medical use, can help fight Alzheimer’s disease by preventing harmful protein clumps from forming in the brain. Researchers tested arginine in lab dishes and in two different animal models (fruit flies and mice with Alzheimer’s-like conditions), and in all cases it reduced the buildup of toxic amyloid proteins. The animals that received arginine not only had less protein buildup in their brains, but they also showed improvements in their behavior and had less brain inflammation. Because arginine is already considered safe for humans and costs much less than current Alzheimer’s antibody treatments, it could potentially be tested in patients relatively quickly. The researchers believe arginine might also help treat other brain diseases caused by misfolded proteins, not just Alzheimer’s.
