The Return of a Classic
As the sweltering days of summer give way to the crisp crunch of autumn, it’s time to consider a wardrobe reboot. The season of pumpkin-spiced everything beckons, and so does the perennial staple: denim. Jeans, the sartorial equivalent of comfort food, have always been a go-to, but they’re taking on new shapes, textures, and trends this fall, and buying a new pair is an easy way to add some interest to your closet and vibe. Full disclosure: I love jeans. But they don’t always love me. I’m 54, and what my sister and I call “the thickening” is upon me, aka the meno spread. Therefore, anything tight around my waist is a no-go. If, by some miracle, all of the Pilates I’ve been doing and my sugar sabbatical (it had to be stopped) yield anything noteworthy, I’ll go back to jeans because I love the effortless, iconic cool they represent. That said, there is much to review, so let’s get to it.
Updating the Silhouette
While slipping into your timeworn jeans is akin to wrapping yourself in a cozy blanket, there’s something undeniably inspiring about updating your look. Whether you’ve experienced weight fluctuations, hormonal shifts, or simply a change in taste, the right pair of jeans can make a difference. For some, stretch is a non-negotiable, while others might favor the structured allure of rigid denim. Rest assured, there’s a perfect fit for everyone.
Barrel Jeans: A Polarizing Trend
Barrel jeans might seem odd initially, but they are worth a second glance. Citizens of Humanity offers a subtle take on this trend, balancing fashion-forward aesthetics with wearability. Ralph Lauren and Nili Lotan also excel in this category, each presenting a unique, grown-up twist on the barrel silhouette. Nili’s Shon jeans are a New York icon. Almost every lady with a New York zip code owns a pair.
The Timeless Appeal of Straight Jeans
Straight jeans have an enduring charm that transcends seasons. Ayr’s Secret Sauce jeans, with their iconic blend of comfort and style, are a reassuring choice. If you’re budget-conscious, H&M offers a no-stretch option that looks chic when sized up for a laid-back vibe. Madewell’s Rail Straight Jean is another excellent choice, marrying sustainability with style, though no stretch. These jeans are made with “Regenagri® cotton fibers, which are regenerative-certified, derived from sustainable techniques meant to restore natural ecosystem functions and support farms and organizations across the supply chain.”
Novelty Jeans: A Dash of Vintage Chic
For those seeking a bit of flair, J.Crew’s studded jeans in ecru and denim are irresistible. These pieces harken back to the free-spirited cool of the 1970s. Pair them with a silk blouse and a high bun for an effortless retro look. Or go simple chic with a black turtleneck and flat sandals for in-between days.
The Rise of TikTok-Approved Denim
TikTok isn’t just for viral dances; it’s a treasure trove of fashion finds. Judy Blue jeans are a standout option with their eye-catching front seam. Perfect for pairing with a tucked-in button-down and a tailored blazer, they offer an effortlessly polished look at an accessible price point.
Embracing Size Diversity
Universal Standard leads the way in inclusive sizing, offering options like split-hem jeans that elongate the leg. Old Navy’s Rockstar jeans and Eloquii’s barrel jeans are also commendable for their range of sizes and stylish designs. H&M jeans go up to size 22, and these barrels are in a cool wash; and it’s worth checking all of their jeans in general for well-priced ways to try a trend or two.
Cool Chick Crops and Cuffing Season
R13’s cropped straight jeans are the epitome of cool for those willing to invest. AGolde’s cuffed jeans also top the list, providing a sophisticated take on a contemporary trend. Veronica Beard is another brand that caters to mature women, delivering stylish and comfortable jeans that fit like a dream, and these are tops.
Elevated Basics for Grown-Ups
Tibi offers elevated basics that are perfect for those seeking something beyond the ordinary and mature in the best of ways. Their slouchy jeans blur the line between casual and refined. Roucha and Ruti are indie brands that deserve your attention. They offer innovative sizing and unique designs that stand out in a crowd.
Rachel Comey’s Tamar jeans bring subtle tailoring to the forefront, which is ideal for those looking to level up their denim game. Frame’s Jetset jeans are a revelation, combining the comfort of leggings with the sophistication of jeans. Perfect for travel and those menopausal moments, they are a must-have in any wardrobe. My favorite is the crop, which has a mini-boot cut that is just right and so cute with flats of all sorts.
Return of the GAP
With Zac Posen at the helm, the GAP is experiencing a renaissance. Their dark denim wide-leg jeans are versatile and stylish; perfect for pairing with a contrasting denim shirt or any other fall essential.
The Final Word
One thing is clear in navigating the world of denim for women over 50: the landscape is diverse and brimming with options. Whether looking for a trendy update or a timeless classic, a pair of jeans will always be a good investment. So, as we transition into fall, let’s embrace the season by slipping into something that makes us look and feel fabulous. Remember, the diversity of the denim landscape empowers your style choices, so make like a jean genie and let yourself go.
Good old Levis 501 sized however you like them, win every time. Vintage is even better.
quite right.
I lived in jeans from back …in the dark ages. I was even part of my High School;s new jeans allowed policy! Fun times….and I never looked back until I became a certain age, not sure when. Jeans become uncomfortable for me, and not up to my more chill timing. I still love them, and enjoy seeing others in them though. Good post on jeans and cheers to those that wear them!
I so relate thanks for the response. I much prefer a more comfortable waistband these days but jeans just look so darn good.
