We’ve got our eye on the John Chamberlain show in London April 17-May 26 at the Gagosian Gallery in London. It’ll be the first show of the great, and recently passed, American sculptor in the UK since 2011. Re-purposing is something that’s in fashion these days, but Chamberlain wasn’t really in it to save dead automobiles from the scrap yard. No, our favorite car crusher was interested in a certain flavor of 1960s American Industrial optimism. The candy colors, the monumental scale, the shininess of them — it’s all so gorgeous. But then I think of the deforming methods of which they are made: the crushing, the bending, the brutish tearing of sheet metal. An intellectual, fine art version of seeing a Michael Bay film. If you are a fan of a certain flavor of American abstract sculpture, this is one to see.
