Breakfast Bowl Builder

an app (and bowl) builder at 50

In 2012, James Slusser was diagnosed with very early-stage cancer. Following surgery and per his doctor’s recommendation, he made some radical changes to what he eats, moving towards a more plant-based diet.  Fast forward six years, cancer-free he is the creator of Breakfast Bowl Builder.

The path to this point wasn’t seamless. When he started, he had no idea how to code. So, at the age of 50, he taught himself. “I’ve always been a bit of a tech nerd and it seemed everyone around me knew how to code.  Little kids were doing it, for goodness sake, so if they could do it, then perhaps this old dog can learn a new trick too.”

Breakfast Bowl Builder allows the user to select and combine a base grain, liquid, and whatever add-ins you like, and then let the mixture soak overnight in the refrigerator. The following morning, add fresh fruit and any additional toppings as desired. Once all the ingredients are selected, the app will recap your bowl “recipe” so you may build it.
