Shifting from Control to Connection

In an era dominated by constant stimulation and endless digital distractions, Adam Smith, spiritual wellness expert at Canyon Ranch, presents a compelling argument for choosing uncertainty over worry. Drawing from his background in clinical pastoral education and years in hospice care, Adam’s approach moves away from rigid life goals toward presence, self-compassion, and grounded agency.

Adam emphasizes that most of us are addicted to thinking. This kind of cognitive overdrive, he explains, can fuel anxiety and burnout, especially among high-performing professionals. To quiet the overactive mind, he offers a toolkit rooted in mindfulness, movement, and internal reflection. From walking meditations to simple mantras like “I don’t know,” Adam’s suggestions aim to shift our relationship with discomfort and control.

Spirituality as Personal Practice

Adam doesn’t equate spirituality with religion. Rather, he defines it as a person’s “enjoyment of life, connection to life, and appreciation for life.” For many midlife and older adults, this perspective becomes especially relevant. As health, careers, and relationships shift, so too must the metrics by which we define purpose.

When these shifts start, Adam suggests people ask themselves hard but necessary questions: Are you enjoying your life enough to want to extend it? Is your health supporting what matters most to you? These reflections, he notes, often open new avenues toward both meaning and resilience.

Flow, Grit, and Playfulness

A key insight Adam shares is that adaptability, not mastery, is the skill that enables flow states. Whether you’re an athlete or a weekend gardener, your ability to remain flexible and engaged is what makes the experience fulfilling. This mindset also extends to aging: The second half of life demands new frameworks, not just physical checkups.

Because of this, Adam Smith encourages the inclusion of joy, even in routine or mundane tasks. As he puts it, “It’s very important that you do unimportant things.” These acts, he says, loosen the grip of ego, helping us stay grounded and light.

In a time when the future feels increasingly uncertain, Adam Smith’s message is both timely and timeless: Peace isn’t a destination, but a way of being.
